Hoodia Diet

Currently one of the most publicized forms of natural weight loss products in America, the hoodia diet has been hailed by some as a miracle weight loss program. With features on major news networks such as CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, and BBC it has become one of the most talked about new diet programs. Even Oprah has shown support on her “O” Magazine. For the most part it has received positive reviews and is now in higher demand than ever before.

What is Hoodia?

Hoodia gordonii, also known as hoodia, xhooba, khoba, Ghaap, South African desert cactus, is a rare botanical that grows exclusively in the semi-deserts of South Africa. A cactus like plant, it grows in clumps of upright stems is considered a succulent and not a cactus. It can take approximately 5 years before the plant produces its pale-purple flowers and is ready for harvest. While there are over 20 types of hoodia, only the hoodia gordonii variety is believed to have appetite-suppressing properties.

How Does It Work?

Used by the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert for numerous years to ward of hunger and thirst during hunting trips, hoodia has only recently been recognized in the United States and Europe as an effective dietary supplement.

Scientists have found several compounds in the plant that helps with appetite suppression. It contains a steroidal glycoside molecule known as P57 that is 10,000 times as active as glucose, resulting in the nerve cells in the mid-brain trigging the feeling of fullness. Simply put, the compounds in the plant trick your body into believing it is full.

Hoodia in the Marketplace

A mainstay of all hoodia diet programs, Hoodia supplements can be purchased in various forms including pills and liquid extracts. These supplements may be noted as having pure hoodia or the hoodia may be only part of the complete makeup of the supplement. These supplements can be purchased from representatives of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) certified manufacturers. Check your local drug store or check out hoodia products available on the Internet.

Keeping it Real

Due to the rarity of the plant and its limited growing area, fakes and counterfeits as well as diluted hoodia products are running rampant in the marketplace. Real hoodia is very rare, controlled and expensive. The South African government has strictly regulated exportation of hoodia to the rest of the world. Hoodia is a CITES – an international agreement between countries to protect and regulate international trade of animals and plants – making it impossible for all the products advertising themselves as a hoodia supplement to be, in fact, real. Studies have shown that as many as 50% of hoodia products contain little or no hoodia at all.

Is Hoodia For You?

If you want a low to no risk dietary supplement the hoodia diet could be for you. But due to strict guidelines and growing restrictions, hoodia is not as available as it seems and can be quite expensive. And be sure to keep in mind that what you see may not be always be what you get – just because it says hoodia that does not mean that it is hoodia. Shop for reputation as well as product to help guarantee you are getting what you paid for.

Best Guidelines to How To Decide Upon The Best Weight Management Program For You

By zoe | Dec 30, 2008

Are you ready to lose weight? If the answer is “YES”, you may be interested in joining a weight management program. When it comes to joining a weight loss program, you will find that you have a number of options. If this is your first time looking for such programs, you may be unsure as to what you should be looking for. If that is the case, you will want to continue reading on.

One of the best ways to go about finding the perfect weight management program for yourself is to ask yourself a number of important questions. One of the first questions that you should ask is: “How much time do I have to devote to meetings?” If you were to join a local weight management program, you would probably be required to attend weekly meetings. You may not have the time to do so. In that case, you should look into joining an online program, since they are specifically designed for those with busy schedules.

Another question that you will want to ask yourself, when looking to find the perfect weight management program is concerning your willpower. With an online program, you will be given more freedom, since you do not have to physically report to meetings and answer to group leaders. While this freedom is nice, it has allowed many hopeful individuals to go off track. If you do not think that you can stick with your weight goals and instructions, it may be better to join a local program.

Another one of the many questions that you will want to ask yourself, when looking for a weight management program to join, is how much money you have to spend. While it is possible to find free “lose weight” programs, both locally or online, it is actually quite rare. In your search for the right weight program, you will find that they have a wide range of expenses. Commonly, you will find that online programs are much less expensive than those operated locally. If you are on a tight budget, the cost of each weight loss program that you come across will play a large role in your decision.

You should also ask yourself just how embarrassed with your current weight or your physical appearance you currently are. Although you should have nothing to be ashamed of, you may still feel that way. If that is the case, you may be unwilling to attend local weight loss meetings. Of course, you need to remember that everyone else in your meetings is likely feeling the same way; but you don’t have to put yourself in an awkward situation. If you are concerned with your appearance or what others may think of you, you may want to look into joining an online program instead.

The above mentioned questions are just a few of the many that you should ask yourself if you are interested in joining a weight loss program. While there are a number of benefits to joining a locally operated weight loss program, as well as an online weight loss program, you need to make the decision that is best for you and your own needs.

No Flab for a Healthy Heart

By zoe | Dec 29, 2008

A recently published U.S. study reports that even a small amount of excess fat raises the risk of heart failure.

It's no surprise that obesity (defined as being around 20% overweight) will increase the risk of heart problems. But this latest study indicates that even carrying just a little excess fat has risks for the heart.

Researchers have closely watched and recorded the health of over 21,000 U.S. male doctors for twenty years to gather data. They have found that even those who were only slightly overweight were at higher risk of heart problems, and the likelihood of them experiencing problems increased the more overweight they were.

It was found that men who are about 5 feet 10 inches tall increased their risk of heart failure by about 11 percent for every 3.2kg (7 pounds) of excess weight. Heart failure is a contributory factor in as many as 300,000 deaths in the United States each year.

Exercise is an important factor in reducing the risk of heart problems. People who exercise as little as only 2 or 3 times a month reduce their risk of heart failure by around 18% when compared with others who took no exercise.

As we enter the Christmas period of mass-over-indulgence it is sobering to think about the harm that each of us could be doing to our hearts with every mince pie we eat. Here are a few suggestions that I hope will help you fight off that unwanted fat over the festive season:

Drink Lots of Water: Always have a glass of water with every meal. Ensuring your body remains hydrated helps to burn fat. Also, water has zero calories.

Wear Tight Clothes: This is a simple way to monitor any build up of flab. If you wear clothes that are good and snug you will soon be aware of any additional body fat as you will not be able to do up your jeans.

Compensate for Treats with Exercise:
You know you are going to be tempted by all sorts of lovely treats so make certain you burn them off with adequate exercise. Its useful to know exactly what you need to do to use up the energy provided by that mince pie before you eat it.

Don’t Give in to Temptation: Much easier said than done. But if you try reminding yourself if you eat that last mince pie you will need to do a whole load of vigorous exercise that may be enough to steer you away from the temptation.

How to Brush Your Teeth to Beat Halitosis

By zoe | Dec 28, 2008

One of the main reasons why you might be dealing with halitosis is because you are having problems with your teeth.  If you have been to the dentist recently and have ruled out problems with your teeth, such as tooth decay or gum disease, but it might be a problem with your overall oral hygiene.  Most of us have been brushing our own teeth for most of our lives and we may consider it to be a no-brainer.  The fact of the matter is, if you’re not brushing properly then you might have a problem with bad breath as a result.

The first thing that you should make sure that you are doing is brushing your teeth after every meal.  Not only will this help to remove any food particles that may decay and attract bacteria, it also helps to keep our teeth from decaying as well.  Something else that you want to make sure that you are doing, however, is to floss regularly.  Most of us tend to skip this step but if we are, it can easily lead to halitosis as well as other dental problems.  Make sure that you floss at least once every day and it would not be a bad idea for you to floss after every meal if you have the ability to do so.

An area of the mouth that tends to be overlooked whenever most of us brush our teeth is the tongue.  You may not realize this but the tongue is actually the area of the mouth which is often to blame for our smelly breath.  Have you ever taken a good look at your tongue?  The bacteria that is growing on it is often easy to see.  That is why many people have adopted the practice of scraping the tongue regularly but even this may not be enough to keep halitosis at bay.  Make sure that you take a little bit of time to brush your tongue regularly, each and every time you are brushing your teeth.

Finally, you should make sure that you are gargling regularly.  There are plenty of different mouthwashes that are out on the market which can help to cover over halitosis.  Be cautious, however, whenever children use these because they often contain alcohol and can be dangerous if swallowed.  You might also try gargling with salt water as this helps to keep the bacteria down and leaves your mouth feeling fresh afterword.

Weight Loss Hypnosis: Shed Those Pounds Easily!

By zoe | Dec 28, 2008

Most of us have been on a diet at some stage or other. If you're a normal dieter, you'll have reached times when your weight plateaus and nothing you do seems to change the weight shown on the scales.

It’s at times like these that hypnosis for weight loss can help you in your quest to lose those pounds. Not just for a few weeks or a few months. But for as long as you like!

Weight loss hypnosis works direct - it changes the way your brain works, for the better. Your conscious brain is the part that you deal with most. Your subconscious mind is the bit of your brain that's actually controlling almost everything you do. It looks after your body, keeping you breathing and replacing all those cells within you that need replacing.

Your unconscious mind carries out all the commands it’s given without question. Which is bad news when it comes to diets. If you’ve ever experienced a craving for chocolate or some other “less than healthy” food, chances are it’s your unconscious mind causing this desire.

You likely don’t even remember giving the command to eat lots of food to the part of your mind that’s really in control of what happens to you. Which means it’s not your fault that your diet isn’t working.

Hypnotism for weight loss works to turn your mind around. It works at a subtle level that you may not notice at once or maybe even at all. But you will notice it when your waistline gradually starts to shrink. Your friends will notice your new, slimmer, self as well.

The big advantage of weight loss hypnosis is that it’s completely natural. It will work with your brain to get your body back to it’s natural, balanced state. You’ll find yourself naturally shunning those unhealthy foods that you’re allowing yourself to eat at moment. Hypnosis will work with you to re-program your mind to want to eat healthily. That may be hard to believe at the moment, especially if you can’t walk past the cake display without having to grab something from it. But after a few days simply listening to a weight loss hypnosis track, you’ll be amazed at the differences that start to happen.

Are Weight Loss Drugs Right For You

By zoe | Dec 27, 2008

There are a number of new Weight Loss Medications available on the market today. However, these Medications are not intended for the average person who has an extra 10 pounds to lose before their wedding. Prescription Diet Medications are designed for people who are significantly obese or have weight-related medical problems that must be corrected quickly to prevent further complications. Here is a basic guide to determining if weight loss drugs may be right for you. Of course, you must always consult your doctor for a thorough evaluation and prescription.

There are certain guidelines concerning who may be prescribed Diet Medications. A patient must have a body mass index that is over 30, unless they have other obesity-related health conditions such as heart problems, diabetes, or high blood pressure. These severe medical conditions lower the body mass index requirement to 27. Whether or not a medical condition is obesity-related and grounds for prescribing medication can depend on the doctor, so get a second opinion if you disagree with your doctor’s assessment. These health problems can become severe if left unchecked and prescription weight loss Medications may be the answer you have been looking for.

The most common Diet Medications work by suppressing the appetite. These types of diet aids have been around for decades, with amphetamines and Dexedrine being used even back in the 1950s. A new type of appetite suppressant drugs use a slightly different mechanism to achieve the same result, reducing their appeal for abuse. For example, the popular drug Meridia inhibits the release of a certain type of brain chemical that is responsible for signaling hunger. This way, the patient never even gets hungry, so there is no feeling of depriving themselves of something they want. Unfortunately, Meridia is known to increase blood pressure and heart rate, making it unsafe for many people with cardiovascular issues.

Besides the Diet Medications that suppress appetite, there is another class of drugs designed to interfere with the body’s ability to absorb fat from food. Xenical was the first of these lipase inhibitor Medications to be approved, hitting the market in 1999. These drugs work by inhibiting the body’s production of lipase, which is a necessary part of the fat absoprtion process. Without this enzyme, fat molecules cannot be broken down and will pass harmlessly through the digestive system. The side effects of Xenical show the drawback to letting fat leave the body in its unprocessed state, with cramps, flatulence, diarrhea, and anal leakage being the most common.

Testing is always being performed on new drugs for the commercial markets, so it is only a matter of time before there are better options for people wishing to lose weight. Some developmental medicines have received short-term FDA approval, but they have shown too many side effects to be approved for mainstream use at this time. With some more refining by the pharmaceutical companies’ research and development departments, they should be available as part of the next wave of prescription Diet Medications.

Consequences of Childhood and Teen Obesity in America

By zoe | Dec 26, 2008

Childhood obesity in america has been described by many, including the U.S. Surgeon General, as an epidemic. Over 15 percent of children are overweight, this is an increase of 9 percent since the 1960’s. But what are the consequences of this national problem? How will it affect the next generation, and how can we stop it?

Cognitive Development and Impaired Learning

Numerous studies by the International Institute of Health, Harvard Medical School and many others have proven that a poor diet and lack of exercise not only lead to childhood obesity, but also severely impair a childs cognitive learning skills and development.

According to a May 2008 study by the Mayo Clinic, the reason your child may not be doing as well in school could be caused by a poor diet rather than lack of school effort.

Children who eat a diet consisting of predominantly fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and complex carbs scored much higher in intelligence and cognitive skills tests than their peers who had a bad diet steeped in refined sugars and saturated fats.

Unlike adults, children’s brains are still developing. Therfore it is critical that they get the healthy diet they need now, before it’s too late. Probably the longest-lasting and hardest-to-repair consequence of childhood obesity in America will be the subsequent learning impairments rooted in this national malaise.

Major Physical Health Problems

Barring any serious heart of lung problems, any 10-year-old child should be able to run the length of a soccer field without running out of breath or experiencing chest pains. The obesity endemic in children is leading to a generation with a number of serious physical impairments ranging from knee and joint problems to diabetes to heart and lung problems.

According to the Surgeon General, over 300,000 Americas will die from obesity-related illnesses and health problems. If childhood obesity does not slow down by the changing of lifestyle’s, this number will only increase.

Financial Implications

In 2000, the annual cost of excess weight to the U.S. was close to $117 billion in health care costs and lost productivity. So, not only are the health consequences of childhood obesity dire for the individual, they could be potentially financially crippling for the country.

The Solution

The fundamental reason behind the critical level of childhood obesity in Americas is simple - children are just eating too much non-nutritious “food” and not making the time for sufficient exercise to burn off excess calories. Over the decades, the fundamental needs of people have not really changed, but our habits have.

As a country, we need to begin teaching our children about healthy eating patterns, bringing regular exercise back into the school curriculum, encouraging parents to turn off the television and putting the cover back on the cookie jar.

The Truth About Losing Belly Fat…

By zoe | Dec 25, 2008

Lose stubborn stomach fat

Are you ready to hear the real truth about getting rid of stomach fat? First, let’s start with the facts: Nearly two out of three Americans are overweight or obese, while spending 40 billion dollars annually on fat loss products.

So, using nothing but the facts, what does that tell you about getting six pack abs?

Weight loss products are useless when it comes to losing excess stomach fat. As a matter of fact, they actually make it harder to permanently lose weight. I’m not sure why everyone thinks there’s a secret to dropping belly fat, but there’s no secrets- and there’s no shortcuts. So what’s the best way to lose weight?

Here’s the complete story about getting rid of stomach fat. There’s only one thing that works: You have to burn off more calories than you consume.

NOTHING ELSE CAN WORK.

If you want to learn how to do this, keep reading. If you think it’s sounds like too much hassle, stop right here. If there is a “secret” to getting a flat stomach, it’s this:

You have to be willing to change the poor habits that are making you gain weight, over to healthy habits that will make you lose it. I know it sounds obvious, but that is where everyone fails. I can’t point any fingers. I failed at losing weight for 30 years. The only thing that finally worked was when I changed my daily habits.

Now I choose my weight right to the pound.

And here’s the best part: I’m 50 years old. I’m not athletic. I have average smarts. I have a very hectic schedule. Right now I’m working about twelve hours a day. I have no special tools that you don’t have. In other words, if I can learn how to lose excess stomach fat.

YOU CAN ALSO.

I promise, it’s easier than you think. Again, it’s not in the products. You don’t need to buy anything special to burn off belly fat. After I learned how easy it was, I wrote a four step e-manual about it. And no, it’s not a diet book. It’s about learning the habits that make you naturally and permanently lose weight.

Remember, that’s the key to losing your belly fat, you have to change the habits. That’s why weight loss products don’t work permanently. They can’t teach you how to change your habits- they make it harder to change your habits.

If your skeptical, just look at the facts: forty billion spent, NO RESULTS.

I lost all the weight I wanted by doing nothing more than changing my habits. You’d be amazed at how many people think it’s impossible for a 50 year old to have a flat stomach. I promise, my pictures have not been changed in any way.

I was overweight for 30 years. But all I did was what I’m telling you to do. I changed my weight gain habits over to weight loss habits. I didn’t do anything weird. I didn’t fast or cleanse my colon. I lost all the weight I wanted naturally. If you want to lose weight permanently, you have to do what works in the real world. And what’s being sold by the giant weight loss industy does not work- as proven by the FACTS.

I did not buy one weight loss product. I bought all my food at the grocery store. ALL I DID WAS THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS: I ate right and got some exercise. That is all I did. If you want to get six pack abs, that’s all you have to do too.

Here’s my biggest tip when it come to changing your habits: When your tempted to do something that’s unhealthy, you have to have a thought- or thoughts, in the back of your mind that’s more powerful than that temptation. It does not matter what that thought is. It can be anything from wanting to make your children proud of you to showing that ex you can accomplish something meaningful. All that matters is this: That thought works for you.

Remember, if a 50 year old average person can get rid of stomach fat, you can succeed at safe weight loss, and transfrom your life too!

Every Living Thing Is On A Diet

By zoe | Dec 24, 2008

Speaking nutritionally, a diet is simply “the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism.”

No suffering stated or implied.

Every organism alive is on a DIET…has been since it’s life began…and will be till it’s life ends.

A human new-born thrives on a diet of milk alone–natural or “formulated”. Soon enough that diet expands to include strained thises and thats; and before long the transition to solid food. Somehow these youngsters know when they are full and they turn instantly to some other diversion.

Never bored, and living in a relatively stress free world, they simply eat to live rather than “living to eat”.

Living to eat comes later, and is a learned rather than instinctual response to hunger.

Exposure to the all pervasive world of advertising comes along at just about the same time as the transition to solid food. Now instead of being satisfied by the healthful and nutritious offerings from a loving parent, they are tempted and re-tempted by a constant barrage of far from healthy, so-called, food.

Prove it to yourself. Watch an hour or so of what is currently being offered as and see for yourself. A few dozen empty calorie messages later, you will probably find yourself very “hungry”; and it will be a totally misguided hunger that has nothing to do with “eating to live”.

And thus begins the “eating in response to” experience. Some of us eat “in response” to boredom; for many it is stress; for some it comes with frustration. For a lot of us it is simply a response to suggestion–TV, and radio, magazine ads, billboard blasts,–you name it. It often seems that the world is conspiring to cause overeating.

Just how effective that “conspiracy” can be is borne out by the fact that over half of the world’s population is overweight. Over HALF–and increasing (poor pun intended) every year. And that’s in the face of natural selection–nature’s way of “thinning the herd”. We who are overweight tend to die sooner–the ultimate “double whammy”. We pay a dear price for these extra pounds; and our kids are practically assured of the same fate.

Since you’ve read this far, it’s safe to assume that you’ve already been around the “dieter’s world/hell” long enough to be familiar with the buzz words: NEW MIRACLE DIET, LOSE WEIGHT FAST, THE LAST DIET YOU WILL EVER NEED, GREEN/BLACK/WHITE TEA DIET, etc.

Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all, put things in a more frightening perspective. Google returned 29,500,000 results for the word “diets”. That’s TWENTY NINE AND A HALF MILLION.

Can they all be effective? Sure. Because the bottom line for all of them…at least the legal ones…is simple: EAT LESS…EXERCISE MORE. Twenty nine and a half million pages condensed into four words. And you thought this was gonna be tough?

Sure, lots of those millions of pages suggest that you: EAT LESS…EXERCISE MORE and “drink this magic tea” or “eat this magic supplement” or “drink gallons of cabbage soup” or some such.

The question that so many of us fail to ask is: “What happens if I just EAT LESS…EXERCISE MORE and also save a gazillion dollars by not buying any of your magic pills, potions and soup recipes?”

We all know the answer; yet we continue searching for the “miracle” diet, routine, and/or supplement.

At the risk of short circuiting over twenty-nine million other suggestions, it’s time to accept the fact that the only “magic” is in us–programmed there since birth. We simply need to get back in touch.

For the continued purposes of this blog and accompanying web site, we’re going to expand the theme a bit:

EAT…MORE OR LESS AND EXERCISE…MORE OR LESS.

With 125 extra pounds between us, Gayle and I have chosen a realistic and achievable goal.
